Montana's state employees deserve the opportunity to learn accurate history, reflect on how that history affects our present, and, most of all, the opportunity to be better. If we are unwilling to be brave enough to look to the past for ways to improve our future, I worry about a lot more than just this bill’s passage. Montana, like every place on the planet, has a complicated past, and that past has implications and consequences for Montana’s future. ![]() This is a copy & paste far-right hate bill, plain and simple. The bill sponsor, Senator Trebas, openly admitted that this bill was to "jump on the bandwagon" of other anti-dei bills being introduced in places like Florida. ![]() The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee. It can be especially uncomfortable to learn about history and periods of injustice, but we cannot and should not legislate people's emotional reactions. The Sum of Us shows how the economic and political powers-that-be have exploited race to split Americans into warring tribes trapped in a zero-sum game fighting for what’s left after the top 1 take 40 of the wealth. This bill will lead to a gross mischaracterization of my and other practitioners' line of work in Montana law. Despite being named the Montana Individual Freedoms Act, does absolutely nothing to protect the freedom of Montanans.
